"مصطلح السفينة عند العرب" هو عنوان هذه الرسالة، وهو يطرح تساؤلاً وهو: "هل إن أسماء السفن مهمة جداً بحيث تدعو إلى أن يكرّس لها دراسة خاصة؟" والجواب على ذلك: إن الأبحاث المعجمية من هذا النوع في لغة كاللغة العربية حيث لا يكون من السهل التفريق بين معنى الكلمة واستخدامها هو أمر ليس من الصعب القيام به فحسب، بل يكاد يكون من غير المعروف معرفة تامة. ولدراسة مثل هذه الأسماء، كما يرى القارئ من خلال قراءته لهذا الكتاب، قيمتها الدائمية وهي علاوة على ذلك تدلنا على اهتمامات تاريخية حضارية.
وقد أخذ الباحث في حسبانه في دراسته هذه، حول مصطلح السفينة عند العرب أخذ خاصة الارتباط الكلي لأي كلمة تدل على "سفينة" ما عندما تمرُّ أمام عينيه، وبهذا يكون قد قام بتقديم جزء من عمل دراسي مبدئي عن "تأريخ الملاحة العربية" أو ما يماثلها".
هذا وقد كان ترتيب الكلمات تبعاً للتسلسل الألفبائي، إلا أن الباحث قام بذكر بعض المعاني والكلمات ذات العلاقة الاشتقاقية حسبما تقتضيه الظروف. مشيراً من البداية على فهرس الكلمات الموجود في آخر الدراسة. أما ما يخص الكتابة الصوتية، وهي التي تنقل بها لغة بحروف أخرى Transkription، فقد اختار الباحث "الموسوعة الإسلامية" واستعملها مع المختصرات المتبعة المعروفة عموماً.
