ليس أدل على اتساع لغة العرب وغناها، مما نلمسه من ضروب الاختلاف والفروق، ويتضح هذا في ما صاغه العرب من ألفاظ يصفون بها ما وقعت عليه أبصارهم من المحسوسات وما جال في خواطرهم من دقائق المعاني وقد عنيت المعاجم العربية اللغوية، إلى جمع أشتات اللغة في كتب ومعاجم تحفظ اللغة وتصونها من الضياع، وقد صنف اللغويون العرب عدداً كبيراً من المعاجم تقبل الناس بعضها وأقبلوا عليه كما ذموا الكثير منها وقدحوا فيه وأنكروه.
وقد عملوا على جمع شتات اللغة من أفواه العرب الخلصاء وجمعوها في بطون كتبهم خوفاً عليها من الضياع، ولكن هذه المعاجم قد علق بها الكثير من الشوائب كسواء اختيار الألفاظ وعدم التحرز من الحوشيه والوحشية وعدم التنسيق والتعريف الدوري، أي أن تفسر كلمة بأخرى مرادفه لها تم تفسر الثانية بالأولى، كما حفلت المعاجم أيضاً بالتقصير في تعدية الأفعال القاصرة، والخلط بين المعنى الحقيقي والمعنى المجازي، وإهمال الألفاظ المولدة.
وفي عصرنا وضعت عدة معاجم منها معجم المعلم بطرس البستاني والشيخ سعيد الخوري والأب لويس معلوف اليسوعي، غير أن معجم "البستان" أجلها وأكثرها نفعاً وقد راعي الشيخ العلامة عبد الله البستاني إظهار خصائص الحروف ما أسعفه الجهد والزمن كاشفاً بذلك عن سر من أسرار العربية وكنوزها الدفينة، كما أشار إلى مدلولات بعض الحروف عند دخولها في تركيب الألفاظ.
