وعندما صار أكبر من ذلك على نحو ما ، شرع يتسكع حول الهضبة الخالية في الخارج.لم يكن من شيء هنا سوى الثكنة، وكانت مسيجة بسور عال غير نافد،مصنوع من طوب أحمر.عدا ذلك فكل شيء كان موجودا أسفل في الوادي: هناك البلدة ،والبساتين والنهر الذي يخترق، باتجاه الجنوب ـالآلاف من أشجار النخيل . كان بامكانه أن يجلس في بقعة أو على صخرة في أعلا فينظر تحته إلى الناس يسيرون في طرقات البلدة. ولن وعندما صار أكبر من ذلك على نحو ما ، شرع يتسكع حول الهضبة الخالية في الخارج.لم يكن من شيء هنا سوى الثكنة، وكانت مسيجة بسور عال غير نافد،مصنوع من طوب أحمر.عدا ذلك فكل شيء كان موجودا أسفل في الوادي: هناك البلدة ،والبساتين والنهر الذي يخترق، باتجاه الجنوب ـالآلاف من أشجار النخيل . كان بامكانه أن يجلس في بقعة أو على صخرة في أعلا فينظر تحته إلى الناس يسيرون في طرقات البلدة. ولن يتمكن إلا فيها بعد من زيارة المكان ، ورؤية الهيأة التي عليها الناس. ولأنه هجر من طرف أمه، فان هؤلاء كانوا يسمونه ولد الحرام، ويسخرون حين ينظرون إليه. وكان يبدو له أنهم،بصنيعهم ذاك،يأملون أن يجعلوا منه ظلا حتى لا يكون عليهم التفكير فيه ككائن واقعي وحي.هكذا كان ينتظر برهنة قدوم الوقت الذي سيكون عليه أن يذهب فيه كل صباح إلى البلدة ليعمل.أما الآن فقد كان يساعد في أشغال المطبخ،ويقدم خدمات لضباط الثكنة،كما يخدم بعض ركاب السيارات العابرة خلال الناحية مقابل مكافآت صغيرة في المطعم وطعام مجاني ومثوى في حجرة صغيرة بمساكن الخدم .أما اليوناني فلم يكن يدفع له أجرا. ولما بلغ أخيرا السن التي تبدو فيها هذه الوضعية مخجلة،ذهب من تلقاء نفسه إلى البلدة في أسفل فشرع يعمل ،هو وصبيان آخرون في مثل سنه ،مساعدا في صنع الآخر الذي يستعمله الناس لبناء مساكنهم.
