ليس هذا الكتاب سيرة حياة كاملة لأنطونيو غرامشي، بالرغم من أنه يتضمن معلومات من هذا النوع عن كل مرحلة من مراحل حياته، لأنه لم ينجز حتى الآن سوى الجزء الأساسي من العمل الذي يجب القيام به لجعل كتابة هذه السيرة ممكنة.
لهذا الكتاب هدف أكثر محدودية، وهو تقديم وتحليل أفكار غرامشي الرئيسية في ميادين السياسة السياسة والتاريخ خلال فترتي إبداعه الأكبر، الفترة الأولى: كزعيم لحركة "النظام الجديد" في تورنيو سنتي 1919- 1920، والفترة الثانية: كشخصية رئيسية في الشيوعية الإيطالية بدءاً بإرتقائه إلى قيادة الحزب الشيوعي الإيطالي في سنة 1923 وإنتهاء بكتابته "دفاتر السجن" التي كتب الجزء الأكبر منها بين 1919- 1934.
