موضوع هذا الكتاب موضوع خطير، وهو نقد ما وصل إلينا من الحديث الذي يحمل عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وتمييز الصحيح من غيره ليطمئن المسلمون إلى ما يروى لهم عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقد ألحّ المؤلف في تبيين أشياء تحمُل على النبي وليست من كلامه في شيء وإنما دست عليه لأغراض مختلفة بعضها دسه جماعة من اليهود أظهروا الإسلام والورع واخترعوا أشياء من عند أنفسهم أضافوا بعضها إلى النبي وأضافوا بعضها إلى الثوراة. وليست هي من كلام النبي ولا من التوراة في شيء. وبعضها دسّ أثناء الوعظ والقصص أريد بها دعوة الناس إلى الفضائل وحبّ الخير واجتناب الآثام فرغبوا ورهبوا ولم يتحرّجوا من إضافة أشياء إلى النبي يرون أن الناس يتأثرون بها أكثر مما يتأثرون بكلام الوعاظ والقصاص. وأشياء أخرى دست تملقاً للخلفاء ورجال الحكم، وكان لهذا كله أثره.
هذا وغيره سجّله المؤلف في كتابه، وهو لم يبتكره من عند نفسه وإنما سجّل مما كان علماء المسلمين يقولونه ويتبعونه في كتبهم كما فعل ابن تيمية وتلميذه، ولكن المحدثين نسوا هذا وأعرضوا عنه فاختلفت على الناس أمور الحديث، وكان فضل المؤلف في إظهارها في هذا العصر في هذا الكتاب ليقرأها الذين يحبون أن يصلح دينهم ويعصم من التخليط الكثير.
