استفاض أمر هذا الكتاب وأحدث دوياً هائلاً بين أرجاء العالم الإسلامي، إذ أنه من جهة ظفر من كبار العلماء بالتقدير الكريم، ولكنه من جهة أخرى قوبل بالشتم القاذع والسب الوضيع، السبب في ذلك يعود إلى تناول المؤلف محمود أبو رية دراسة شخصية هذا الصحابي دراسة مستفيضة شاملة، حتى تبدو للناس شخصية هذا الصحابي المشهور على حقيقتها، حيث عاد في دراسة هذه الشخصية إلى مصادر السنة الموثوق بها، واعتمدها وحدها في هذه الدراسة ولم يرجع إلى تميزها، ونهج في كتابه هذا منهجاً واضحاً مستقيماً، وهو سبيل المؤرخ التي يتحرى الصدق والأمانة هذا ما يذكره في مقدمته. وقد أماط اللثام عن أهم ما يجب على المسلمين وغير المسلمين معرفته من روايات الصحابي "أبو هريرة" ومبلغ نصيبها من الصدق ومدى نسبتها إلى النبي، حتى تعلم حقيقتها، وتؤخذ على مقدار وزنها، ومن أجل ذلك اتجهت غاية أبو رية إلى التأريخ لأبي هريرة دون سائر الصحابة.
