يضم هذا الكتاب بني دفتيه أروع ما قال عمر وجميل والمجنون ونزار، ولكن لماذا اقتصر البحث على هؤلاء الأربعة من أدباء الشعر والكلمة دون غيرهم، لأنهم وبكل بساطة، هم زعماء الغزل في الأدب العربي على امتداد تاريخ هذا الأدب. فالأول عُرف بالحب حتى الجنون، وقصة حبه لليلى أصبحت مضرب الامثال، وأشعاره فيها تناقلتها الألسن عبر العصور. أما جميل فهو زعيم المدرسة الغزلية العذرية في العصر الأموي، وهو الذي وضع للمدرسة أسسها الأولى. وأما عمر فهو زعيم المدرسة الغزلية الحضرية بلا منازع، إنهم أحد القلائل في الأدب العربي الذين برعوا في تصوير مغامراتهم العاطفية وتصوير تعلق الانثى بالرجل، فقد قلبوا الآية، وأصبحت المحبوبة هي التي تطارد الجيب وتحاول اصطياده، أما نزار فقد غدا شعره الغزلي الخبز اليومي للعشاق في العصر الحديث، فقد تطور على يديه الشعر تطوراً لم يعرف مثله من قبل حتى أصبح شاعر المرأة، بل شاعر الغزل والحب دون منازع.
