لم يحظ شاعر من شعراء العربية بما حظي به المتنبي من اهتمام بشعره، ما بين شارح وناقد، وقد شرح ديوانه عدد كبير من الأدباء، تصدى لبعض هذه الشروح أحمد بن علي بن معقل الأزدي في كتابه هذا، فذكر المآخذ على كل شرح من هذه الشروح. وهي: شرح ابن جني الموسوم بالفَسر، والثاني: المآخذ على شرح أبي العلاء المعري الموسوم باللامع العزيزي، والثالث: المآخذ على شرح التبريزي الموسوم بالموضِح، والرابع: المآخذ على شرح الكندي الموسوم بالصفوة، والخامس: المآخذ على شرح الواحدي.
