لم يكن الفلاسفة المسلمون، والفارابي أحدهم، شرّاحٍاً لأرسطو وغيره من فلاسفة اليونان فقط، بل كانوا ذوي شخصيةٍ فلسفيّةٍ مستقلةٍ، تُؤْمِنُ بانتهاج البرهان المنطقيّ في سبيل الوصول إلى المعرفة اليقينيّة، وتُوظّفُ الفلسفات الواردة على نحوٍ يوافق منطقها العقليّ. ومن هنا تتوجّه هذه الدراسة إلى استجلاء ملامح نظريّة الفنّ عند الفارابي بعدّها جزءاً من بناء فلسفيٍّ شاملٍ خاصّ، مُعْرِضةً عن الآراء التي اتهمتْ الفكر العربي بالتلفيق والترقيع، أو التوفيق في أحسن الأحوال.
لم يكن الفارابي فيلسوفاً فحسب، بل كان مفكّراً وناقداً وموسيقيّاً وشاعراً، وإن المُطّلع على مؤلّفاته يجدها غنيةً بآراء نقديّةٍ وفنيّةٍ تشي، برؤيته الفنيّة المتكاملة، وتجعل الباحث متحفّزاً لدراستها، ولمّا كانت نظريّته الفنيّة لم تُدْرَس بعد، وكانت هذه النظرية المنثورة في كتبه ذات أهمية في السياق المعرفي والجمالي، فقد جاء هذا البحث محاولاً معرفة الأسس الفكريّة لآراء أبي نصر، بغية تحديد مبادئ نظريته النقدية في سبيل الإفادة منها تنظيراً وتطبيقاً.
