هذا الكتاب يطرح هموم التربية والمربين ويفتح باباً على النقاشات الدائرة في هذا الميدان. والمؤلف يقدم لكل ذلك ببحث عن أخلاق الممارسة التربوية منطلقاً من نظرة أرسطو لوظيفة التربية التي تهدف إلى جعل الفرد متسماً بالفضيلة.
والمؤلف يرى في هذا الإطار أن التربية عمل هدفه تمكين الذات من تعلم كيفية نيل اعترافها بنفسها واكتساب اعتراف الآخر. ويعرض المؤلف في مقالات الكتاب لجملة مواضيع ترتبط بالتربية وقضاياها، فيبحث الأخلاق والتربية، كما يناقش مستقبل التربية وإصلاح نظامها إذا يرى أن مفهوم إصلاح التعليم كثيراً ما يتم استخدامه للدلالة على كل التغيرات المختلفة التي يتم إدخالها عليه.
ويرى أيضاً أن الإصلاح يعني تغيير مبادئ المؤسسة المدرسية ويتم فعلاً سوى استخدام كلمة إصلاح عندما نعني بها أي نوع من التغير، وفي دراسته لظاهرة الفشل الدراسي يركز المؤلف على ما يقوم به التلاميذ وما ينجون فيه وما يكتسبون من معارف وليس فقط الاهتمام بقصورهم وما يفشلون فيه والاقتصار على تفسير ذلك على الظروف الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافة بأسرها.
