تعتبر الدبلوماسية أحد الفروع الأساسية لعلم العلاقات الدولية بشكل خاص والعلوم السياسية بشكل عام. ولم يعد الاهتمام بمادة الدبلوماسية حكراً على الطلاب بالمدرجات والقاعات الجامعية بل أصبح موضوعها يجذب ميول واهتمامات أوساط أخرى خارج الأوساط الأكاديمية، من هذا المنطلق عمد الكاتب إلى إلقاء الضوء على هذا المصطلح عبر تحديد المبادئ التي يقوم عليها، لذلك قسم كتابه إلى ثلاثة أبواب رئيسية، الأول فيها يختص بالمنطلقات النظرية لدراسة الدبلوماسية، والثاني يتناول مستويات دراسة الدبلوماسية، والثالث يهتم بدراسة الحصانات والامتيازات والإجراءات المراسمية التي تفرضها طبيعة العمل الدبلوماسي. والهدف من هذا الكتاب هو إعطاء دارس الدبلوماسية مقاربة نظرية لدراسة الإطار العالم التي تقوم عليها الدبلوماسية ومن ثم محاولة تحليل ودراسة مستوياتها في إطار هذه المقاربة وذلك من خلال التوفيق بين دائرتين أساسيتين هما السياسة الخارجية ودائرة القانون الدولي العام.
