لما كانت الخلافة من النبوة، وكان لها من جلالة القدر، وفخامة الأمر، أعلاها مراقب، وأشرفها مراتب، ومن أُس الأعمال وقوانين الأفعال، أوضحها معالم، وأثبتها دعائم، ومن شروط المكاتبات، ورسوم الترتيبات، أحسنها طرائق ، وأحكمها وثائق، ومن حقوق الخدمة وحدود الحشمة أولاها بأولي العقل المسكة، وذوي الحزم والحنكة، وأحراها بأن يتداول ويتفاوض ويتناقل ليكون تذكرة للناسي وتبصرة للناشي، وطريقاً إلى معرفة ما عظَمه الله من شأن الدعوة الهاشمية، وأعزَه من سلطان الإمامة العبَاسيَة. فوجدت أكثر ذلك قد درس بتقادم عهوده، وتغيَر وضوعه، وليس كلَ من مرَ على عهد إختار اخباره، أو أمر شاهده فألفه، ووجدتني قد سمعت من إبراهيم بن هلال جدَي فيه، ما لم يكن بقي في وقته من يشاركه "في كثير من علمه، وعلَل ما وقع الإصطلاح عليه منه، ولا بقي الآن من يشاركني" في إسناده وروايته عنه، وخفت أن تلحق هذه البقية بتلك المواضي المنسيَة، ورأيت حقوق النعمة التي غمرتني وغمرت أسلافي للدولة العباسية، ثبَت الله أركانها "تقتضي العناية بها أن أنشر" أعلام سننها القديمة، وأوضح آثار سيرها القويمة، جمعت من ذلك ما ضبطته بالتأليف، وحفظته بالتصنيف، وجعلته من القربات التي أراعي الفرص فيها، وأحافظ على ما وفَر الحظ منها، وأرجو أن يقع الخادم ممَا إعتمد وفعل، الموقع الذي لحظيَه بما رجا وأمَل. وبالله التوفيق.
وسأورد ما أورده أبواباً، أبيَن فيها ما كانت الأمور جارية عليه، وما تأدَت وآلت على الأيام إليه، ليعرف من ذلك السالف والآنف والمتَبع والمبتدع.
