تميزت تركيا بكونها أول دولة حديثة علمانية في الشرق الأوسط ذي الغلبة الإسلامية. في هذه الدراسة الهامة الجديدة يتتبع "فيروز أحمد" عمل أجيال من المصلحين، مقابلاً بين بناة المؤسسة في القرن التاسع عشر وورثتهم "الشبان الترك" من مهندسي النظام الاجتماعي الجديد. وزعم أن كتاب "صُنع تركيا الحديثة" قد ألف في وقت يلعب فيه العسكر الترك دوراً أساسياً بارزاً، فإنه يتحدى الحكمة التقليدية القائلة بجيش أحادي التكوين (مونوليثي) لا يتغير، بعد فصل حول الإرث العثماني يغطي الكتاب المدة المبتدئة بثورة 1908، متفحصاً العمليات التي شكلت بها تركيا الحديثة، إذ تضع الفصول اللاحقة مخططاً لتقدم تركيا خلال نظام الحزب الواحد الذي أنشأه كمال أتاتورك، ثم مرحلة تعدد الأحزاب بين الأعوام 1945-1960، فالتدخلات العسكرية الثلاثة في الأعوام 1960-1971 و1980. ويتفحص المؤلف في الخاتمة الخيارات التي توجه قادة تركيا في الوقت الحاضر.
