هذا الكتاب الثاني في النقد التطبيقي بعد كتاب: "في النقد التطبيقي / قراءات جديدة"، وهو عبارة عن دراسات متفرقة في الأدب؛ شعره ونثره.
ولعل العنوان يعطينا حيّزاً لا بأس به من القناعة التي نتمثلها؛ فسدرة المنتهى (لا المبتدأ) هي شجرة في الجنة، غاية المؤمن أن يتفيّا تحت ظلالها الوارفة، ووصوله إليها هو غاية بذاته، ولكن "سدرتنا" لا تعطي مثل هذه الطمأنينة؛ فمثل هذا النوع من الدراسات، إنما يقع في مقام عال، ولكن هذا المقام العالي لا يحقق الرفاهية التي يحققها المقام العالي لسدرة المنتهى بشكل عام، لأننا أمام نصوص سنعاني معها، وبها، ومن خلالها، عذابات الطريق، ومشاقه التي لن تصل بنا إلى حيّز الإستقرار، وهذا لا يعني قلقاً مستمراً بقدر ما يعني أنه لا يمكن أن نصل إلى القول الفصل، المريح والنهائي، في مثل هذه الدراسات؛ هذا لأننا لا نريد أن نصل أصلاً؛ فالوصول موت، أو لنقل إماتة للنص الذي يفترض أنه أدبي، أي مشع، وذو دلالات متعددة.
