يكتب المرء مذكراته عادة، عندما يشعر بدنو أجله وإنتهاء زاده، أما أنا فما زلت في الثانية والخمسين، ولي همة من لم يتجاوز الثلاثين، ومع ذلك، احببت كتابة هذه المذكرات لسببين، أولهما الخشية على ما تبقى لي من مستندات وصور، بعد أن أتت نار الحرب اللبنانية الأهلية، على معظمها في بيتي الداموري، وثانيهما أن الصحة لم تعد وحدها معيار طول الأعمار، في هذا الزمن الرهيب الرديء، فطارق بابك لخطفك أو إعتقالك، قد يكون ابن حكومة أم ابن ميليشيا؛ فكلاهما يحمل سلاحاً حربياً، ويرتدي لباساً عسكرياً، ويدَّعي حب لبنان، فأي لبنان؟.
أما تسمية نفسي بالماروني، فليست تعصباً لطائفتي الدينية، التي ورثتها إرثاً مفروضاً، ولم اخترها طوعاً، وقد عرفت طيلة حياتي بمناهضتي لكل أشكال نظامنا الطائفي، ولكن الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية، التي اندلعت سنة 1975، كان أهم أسبابها، تمسك بعض أقطاب الموارنة بإمتيازاتهم السياسية، فلولاهم ما عرف لبنان أية حرب؛ فكوني مارونياً، معارضاً لنهج بعض الأحزاب المارونية، وفاضحاً لممارساتها العنصرية، جعلني أبرز بروز الشذوذ، وإن كثر أمثالي الصامتون.
فإلى كل لبناني عربي، وإلى كل عربي أينما كان، وإلى كل لبناني خدعته الدعاوة الإنكماشية الطائفية، أهدي أوراقي هذه، إيماناً مني بأن حرب الفكر، هي خير الحروب وأجداها.
