يعرض الكتاب فكر صابئة حران وعلاقتهم بإخوان الصفا، ويستنتج أن الصابئة الذين كانوا قبل قيام الدولة العربية الإسلامية، هم أنفسهم أخوان الصفا الذين اشتهروا بعد قيام الدولة بعدة قرون.
لقد تكونت الثقافة الحرانية في مدينة "حران" ملتقى الطرق في الحضارة القديمة. وجمع "الحرانيون" حصاد ثقافات متعددة هي خلاصة الفكر السوري والآرامي واليوناني. وبقوا جماعة فيثاغورية سرية حتى مطلع القرن التاسع الميلادي، فعرفوا بالصابئة الحرانية، واتصلوا بالدولة العربية الإسلامية، وترجموا وألفوا في العلوم الرياضية والفلسفية والطب.
من شخصياتهم البارزة في الحضارة العربية الإسلامية المترجم والفيلسوف ثابت بن قرة الحراني، والعالم الفلكي محمد بن جابر البتاني الذي أطلق عليه الغرب اسم بطليموس العرب، وممن تأثر بهم الفيلسوف والطبيب أبو بكر الرازي، والمعلم الثاني أبو نصر الفارابي.
يعتمد الكتاب في عرضه واستنتاجاته على الوثائق، ويطرح عدة إشكاليات يحاول حلها.
