يتبنى هذا الكتاب مفهوم البناء الإجتماعي لدى الطائفة المندائية على نحو علمي كأساس مفيد لعرض الظواهر الدينية والإجتماعية المختلفة وتحليلها باعتبارها تاريخ وطقوس هذه الجماعة الدينية، سواء كانت منبثقة من مؤسسة القرابة أو السلطة الدينية أو التربوية مع الإهتمام على نحو خاص بالمؤسسة الدينية.
في تناوله للأساليب المعيشية وممارسة الطقوس الدينية والمعتقدات والأعراف والقيم للطائفة المندائية، يعتمد الكتاب على أسلوب الوصف الأنتروبولوجي في دراسة الأنظمة والمؤسسات الدينية والعلاقات الإجتماعية ضمن تساندها الوظيفي، ولإظهار طبيعة المؤسسات الحضارية والدينية لهذه الديانة، ووصف أصحابها كأهل دين وكتاب.
هذا الإنطلاق الإستقرائي من الخاص الى العام، من الأصغر الى الأكبر، ومن الراهن الى الكامن، مثّل نزعة استدلالية نهجتها هذه الباحثة الأنتروبولوجية من خلال عملها الميداني الذي دام سنوات طويلة وسط الطائفة وممارستها حيث أكسبتها تجربة حقلية عالية أصبحت فيما بعد دعامة رئيسية لمعرفة الديانة المندائية في حقيقتها التوحيدية، مما حفز العديد من الباحثين والدارسين من بعدها على القيام بدراسات أنثوغرافية كثيرة اعتمدت التعقيب في أصل هذه الديانة والخصائص الحضارية المختلفة، وتحديد اتجاهاتها ومواقعها الأصلية. وهو الأمر الذي استوجب اللجوء الى وسائل البحث التاريخي والأثري لمعرفة ما وقع من اتصالات حضارية في الماضي والإقتباسات التي حملتها معها لمختلف الجماعات العرقية والدينية التي عايشتها على ضفاف دجلة والفرات جنوب العراق، ونهر الكارون غرب إيران.
