حين بدأت دراسات المستقبل في الوطن العربي في الثمانينيات من القرن العشرين من خلال إسهام عدد محدود من المراكز والباحثين، وفي المقدمة منها مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية، وجدت تلك الدراسات في حينها معوقات متعددة. ومع هذا فقد انتهت كلها إلى أن "المستقبل لم يدخل في الوعي العربي"، وقد أشارت كلها، ضمناً أو صراحة، إلى ذلك.
ومن هنا جاءت هذه الدراسة لتبدأ من حيث انتهت تلك الجهود، ولتضع الوعي العربي بالمستقبل موضوعها الأساس. وحيث إن فهم أي موضوع فهماً علمياً يتطلب الكشف عن علاقاته المتبادلة، لذا فإن هذه الدراسة عملت على الربط بين الوعي العربي بالمستقبل وبين مجمل متغيراته الأساسية، بحيث كانت موضوعاته الرئيسية قد تناولت تطور النظرة إلى المستقبل، ونظرة المجتمع العربي إلى الماضي، والحاضر، والمستقبل، مع علاقة الوعي بالمستقبل بكل من حدود المشاركة، والتطلعات الاجتماعية، والحداثة، واللغة، وفكرة التقدم، مع التركيز على الروح العلمية، باعتبارها مبعثاً للتفكير العلمي في فهم ظواهر المجتمع ومشكلاته، وتكييفها والتنبؤ بمآلاتها.
ويعرف الكتاب ذلك كله من منظور منهجي ما جعل من الدراسة إطلالة على قضية مهمة من القضايا العربية من منظور علمي.
