يطلع علينا "المتنبي" من ديوانه كما يطلع الفارس من القلاع: تتقلص حقيقته تحت سقف الصياح، ويختفي حنينه وراء جلبة القتال، حتى غاص وجه "المتنبي" وراء قناعه، وغدا القناع قشرة الوجه اليابسة.
تحاول هذه الدراسة النقاط أطراف الحوار الذي قام، لعشرة قرون خلت، بين وجه الشاعر وقناعه، ففي ذلك وحده مبررها. ففي الربع الأول من القرن الرابع الهجري انطلق من مكان وضيع، في "الكوفة" مغامر مجهول، إلى بوادي العرب وحواضرها، فما كادت الصحراء تفتح له ذراعيها حتى تجاوبت في أرجائها أصداء دويه، فملأ الربع الثاني، كله، بروح الغمار وإرادة الثورة. يجوز المسالك الضيقة، والطرق الوعرة، والمفاوز، هارباً أو قاصداً، كما يقطع مفاوز الكلام مادحاً أو هاجياً. وهو يبتغي من وراء ذلك ما لا يبوح به أو ما لا يدري كنهه، أو ما يتربص الفرص المؤاتية للجهر به جهراً عنيفاً.
كان القناع رفيق السفر، وجسر العلاقة والانقطاع بين الشاعر وممدوحيه. والقناع رمز الرفض والتحصن، ووسيلة اتقاء الخصوم، وأداة التكسب في آن.
إلا أن الأسطورة لم تلبث أن أقتاتت من المغامرة. فثار "المتنبي"، وحرض، وسجن، ثم صعد هذه البدايات المخفقة تصعيداً، حتى أظهرت له نفسه بطلاً من أولئك الأبطال الأسطوريين الذين لا يصارعون الفوارس، ولا يلقون الملوك، حتى يتصد والآلهة الدهر والموت والأقدار وحيدين منفردين.
وسرعان ما نرى قناع الفارس وقد داخله قناع الممثل، إذ وجد نفسه فجأة على مسرح مأساة هو مبدعها، وهو بطلها، وهو ضحيتها... فتتصل الكلمة التي على فمه بالموقف الذي تلقيه فيه الأقدار، وتنبع منه، كما تنبع الثورة من واقع الظلم، نبوع مناقضة وردة، لا نبوع موافقة وإتباع. الكلمة تخيم على أرض الواقع فتظللها كغمامة، ولا تلحقها منها لوثة الاستمرار، أو الرتوب، أو العادية.
