في الشهور التي ناصفت سنة 1988م، فقدت الثقافة العربية الكاتب العربي اللبناني المعروف "إلياس عبود" الذي شاء قبل أن يرحل عن أهله وقومه أن يدون بقلمه آخر مخطوطاته، فكان هذا الكتاب "جذور الديمقراطية في المشرق العربي" والذي كان حصيلة جهد ومطالعات أربعين عاماً قضاها المؤلف ينقب في المخطوطات الأثرية وفي المتاحف والمكتبات، وفي المعابد والكنائس والأديرة، وفي أمهات الكتب الشرقية والغربية، قديمها وحديثها، شاداً الرحال من مكان إلى آخر، دارساً بإمعان فكر سائر الديانات السماوية والوضعية التي اعتنقها العرب على مرّ تاريخهم الطويل، ومتتبعاً ما تركه العرب الأوائل من معالم ديمقراطية تجسدت في إنجازات حضارية لا ينجزها إلا المواطنين الأحرار، ومن أبرزها "سدّ مأرب العظيم".
في طيات الزمن الغابر، توصّل "إلياس عبود إلى أدلة علمية وموضوعية، تدل على أن العرب قبل الأغريق أسسوا مؤسسات ديمقراطية وأقاموا مجالس "الراشدين" قبل أن تظهر في أثنيا فكرة الساحات الشعبية، حتى إذا انتصف العقد الثامن من القرن العشرين، بزغت شمس الحرية على الأرض العربية من جديد - النظرية العالمية الثالثة - بمؤسساتها الجماهيرية، المؤتمرات الشعبية واللجان الشعبية.
