ليس من شأن هذه الدراسة أن تؤرخ لأبي الحسن الأخفش الأوسط، سعيد بن مسعدة (المتوفي 211 أو 214هـ)، ولا أن تبحث في طبيعة علاقته بسيبويه، أتلمذة هي أم زمالة، ولا في شأن علاقة بالكوفيين، وهل أثر فيهم ومهد لهم السبيل إلى التوسع في السماع والقياس، أم تأثر بهم وتلمذ لهم، أم أن التأثر والتأثير هما نتيجة تلاقح فكري بين آرائه وآرائهم كانت حصيلته اتفاقاً في مسائل كثيرة من مسائل العربية، كما ليس من شأنها التأريخ لنشأة المدرسة الكوفية وأشهر أقطابها، فكل هذه الأمور وغيرها في متناول الدارسين، تحفل بها كتب التراجم، والأبحاث الدائرة حول منهجية الأخفش وآرائه النحوية، ومنهجية الكوفيين ومذاهبهم في النحو. وإنما الهدف من هذه الدراسة إبراز أهم الآراء التي شاءها الأخفش والكوفيون معالم جديدة على طريق النحو، وبيان مدى جدتها، ومبلغ فاعليتها إيجاباً أو سلباً، في تطوير الدرس النحوي. كما وتهدف الدراسة إلى تسهيل النحو على طلابه، انطلاقاً من مبدأ نخل التراث والإبقاء على ما فيه من زبدة تكون نواة طيبة لنحو عربي جديد.
