ليس هذا الكتاب مجرد بحث في (الاستشراق)، منهجيته واتجاهاته وأفكاره وأسماء رموزه البارزة، وإنما هو مسعى شامل للبحث في طبيعة تفاعل المثقفين والمفكرين العرب مع الاستشراق فكراً ومرجعاً حضارياً غربياً أولاً، قد يتعاطف مع العروبة والإسلام في جزء منه، أو يخدمك الموروث العربي، لكنه وقبل أي شيء آخر متنوع ثقافي غربي يحمل في داخله مذاهب الغرب لمرحلة ما، كما ينقل مصالحه واهتمامه.
لقد كان التصادم والتصالح مع الغرب أمراً لا مفر منه في جدلية معقدة قادت إلى تفجير البنية المعرفة في الفكر العربي، بما يجعل تناول علاقة الفكر العربي والاستشراق أمراً لازماً، وبما يحتم أيضاً توسيع مساحة الفكر العربي وضمان صدارته في الحياة العربية لا بصفته الأقدر على المسك بأطراف العلاقة بالغرب مسكاً متوازياً حسب، وإنما بصفته الأجدر أيضاً على تحقيق الرؤية العصرية إزاء الآخرين.
