يشكل هذا الكتاب خلاصة تجربة الدكتور فاروق فركوح في مهنة الطب. وهي تجربة غنية بالعلم والعمل والإخلاص للمهنة بكل ما تعنيه الكلمة من معنى، تستحق القراءة. وحسناً فعل الدكتور فركوح بتقديم (حياة الطبيب) إلى الجيل الجديد من الأطباء ليكون عوناً لهم في حياتهم الدراسية والمهنية، ومثالاً لا يحتذى. يقول المؤلف في مقدمة العمل "بعد أن شارفت على العقد الثامن من حياتي ولا زال في العقل رؤية، رأيت تدوين تجارب طبيب علّها تكون عوناً للعاملين بعدي في ميدان الطب أو مهنة الأنبياء.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على مراحل متوالية يمر بها الطبيب في حياته، وهي: 1-حياة ما قبل التعليم الطبي للشاب اليافع، 2-حياة طالب في تعلم الطب، 3-حياة ممارسة المهنة الطبية وتجارب الحياة فيها، 4-حياة التقاعد.
وفي الكتاب يستعرض المؤلف كيفية مزاولة مهنة الطب عبر التاريخ. فيحضر في الكتاب ابن سينا، وأبو قراط أو "أبو الأطباء" و"Galos" أشهر أطباء روما وآخرون من مختلف البلدان، ويتحدث عن أنواع الطلبة في كليات الطب سارداً طموحهم وآمالهم، ومعايير اختيارهم للاختصاص (طب داخلي-طب جراحي). ثم يسرد بعض تجارب حالات مرضية واجهته أثناء حياته العملية، ويُشدد على ضرورة الفحص الطبي قبل الزواج، والفحص بعد الزواج، ويسدي بعض النصائح إلى زملاء المستقبل أثناء كتابة التقارير قائلاً: "هناك شيء أغلى من القانون وهو الضمير" وكذلك يتعرض المؤلف إلى أخطاء المهنية والمشاكل المهنية والعائلية والمسلكية وغيرها من المشاكل الشخصية الذاتية التي تواجه الطبيبن ويختم الكتاب بحياة التقاعد وفي نصائح أو برنامج للمتقاعدين ثم واجبات المتقاعد أمام المجتمع وأمام عائلته، وأمام نفسه. وأخيراً يقول: "والمثل لم يبخل بالقول: آه لو عاد الشباب يوماً ليخبر ماذا فعله المشيب".
