حصل الدكتور مسعود ضاهر على إجازة تعليمية ودبلوم الدراسات العليا في التاريخ من الجامعة اللبنانية، ودكتوراه الحلقة الثالثة ثم دكتوراه دولة في التاريخ الاجتماعي من السوربون، باريس الأولى.
ويمارس التدريس في الجامعة اللبنانية منذ عام 1973.
وقد عيِّن في عام 1996 عضواً في المجلس العلمي الاستشاري للجامعة اللبنانية عن كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية.
ودعي أستاذاً زائراً لعدد من المرات إلى معهد الاقتصاديات المتطورة وجامعة طوكيو بدعوة من (Japan Foundation).
ودعي أيضاً أستاذاً زائراً، لمدة ستة أشهر، إلى جامعة جورج تاون في العاصمة الأمريكية واشنطن بمنحة بحثية من مؤسسة فولبرايت الأمريكية.
وانتدب خبيراً للبرنامج الإنمائي للأمم المتحدة عام 2004.
وهو يتقن إلى جانب اللغة العربية، الفرنسية والإنجليزية، وملم بدرجة جيدة بالروسية، وعلى نحو بسيط باليابانية.
مُنح الدكتور ضاهر جائزة عبدالحميد شومان للعلماء العرب الشبان في الأردن عام 1983، وتم اختياره عضواً في لجنة التحكيم للجائزة نفسها لأعوام 1992 و1994 و2000؛ وعضواً في لجنة تحكيم جائزة سلطان بن علي العويس الثقافية لعام 1999.
ونال وسام المؤرخ العربي عام 1993، ثم وسام التاريخ العربي عام 1996 من اتحاد المؤرخين العرب.
كما اختير خبيراً في مجموعة «الحكم الصالح» بإشراف البرنامج الإنمائي للأمم المتحدة للعام 2004.
ومن أبرز مؤلفاته بالعربية: «تاريخ لبنان الاجتماعي 1914-1926» ( 1974)، و«لبنان، الاستقلال والميثاق والصيغة» (1977)، و«الجذور التاريخية للمسألة الطائفية اللبنانية 1697-1861» (1981)، و«الجذور التاريخية للمسألة الزراعية في لبنان 1900-1950» (1986)، و«المشرق العربي المعاصر: من البداوة إلى الدولة الحديثة» (1986)، و«الهجرة اللبنانية إلى مصر، هجرة الشوام» ( 1986)، و«الانتفاضات اللبنانية ضد النظام المقاطعجي» (1988)، و«مجابهة الغزو الثقافي الإمبريالي الصهيوني للمشرق العربي، دراسة في الثقافة المقاومة» ( 1989)، و«الدولة والمجتمع في المشرق العربي 1840-1990» (1991)، و«مشكلات بناء الدولة الحديثة في الوطن العربي» (1994)، و«النهضة العربية والنهضة اليابانية: تشابه المقدمات واختلاف النتائج» (1999)؛ وهو الكتاب الذي نال عليه جائزة أفضل كتاب عربي في مجال الإنسانيات من مؤسسة الكويت للتقدم العلمي عن العام 2000، و«النهضة اليابانية المعاصرة: الدروس المستفادة عربياً» (2002).
له ثلاثة أبحاث بالإنجليزية، هي: Socio-Economic Changes and Civil War in Lebanon, Modernization in Egypt and Japan in the 19th Century, and Continuity and Change in Japanese Modernization, 1945-1998
