لا يختلف اثنان من المشتغلين بعلم السنة النبوية على أن كتاب "علل الحديث" لابن أبي حاتم يعد من أهم كتب العلل التي ألفها أئمة النقد، بل هو أهم كتاب في ذلك وصل إلينا من تلك الثروة العظيمة التي خلفها أولئك النقاد. فقد جمع الكتاب بين مميزات عدة في مقدمتها جلاله الحافظين أبي حاتم، وأبي زرعة اللذين توليا الإجابة على أسئلة ابن أبي حاتم وغيره عن علل الحديث، ومنزلتهما وشهرتهما في هذا الفن.
وقد تجلى هذا بوضوح في أجوبتهما السديدة المحكمة الدالة على عظم إطلاعهما على السنة، وشفافيتهما في النقد، والقدرة الفائقة على تتبع الطرق واكتشاف الخطأ فهو يقدم صورة ناصعة البياض لنقد السنة في ذلك العصر الزاهي.
ومن مميزات الكتاب كذلك أنه جامع بين العمق في النقد أحياناً فيشبع بذلك رغبة الباحث المتخصص جداً في نقد السنة، وبين سهولة النقد وقربه، فيستطيع إدراكه من تعاطي شيئاً من هذا الفن، وكل ذلك راجع إلى طبيعة الحديث المسؤول عنه، ونوع العلة فيه. وبالنظر للأهمية التي يحتلها هذا الكتاب اعتنى "إبراهيم بن عبد الله اللاحم" بخدمته وبإعادة تحقيقه فعمد إلى ضبط النص وتصويبه ثم اهتم بعزو الطرق إلى مصادرها في كتب السنة. كما واعتنى بالتقديم له بمقدمة تطرق فيها لما يلي: ترجمة أبي حاتم الرازي ترجمة أبي زرعة الرازي، ترجمة ابن أبي حاتم، توثيق نسبة الكتاب إلى مؤلفه نسخ الكتاب، تراجم رواة النسخ، وصف النسخ المعتمدة المنهج المنبع في إخراج الكتاب.
