هذا هو كتاب العلل لابن أبي حاتم أودعه خبرة الإمامين الكبيرين: أبي حاتم، وأبي زرعة، الرازيين، وخبرته هو في نقد الأحاديث، وبيان صحيحها من زيفها. وهو على القطع أجمع كتاب العلل بين أيدي الدارسين والمتخصصين. وعلى أكبر الظن هو أجمع كتاب في علل الحديث.
وقد بدأت العمل في تحقيق الكتاب أنا والزميل والصديق الدكتور عمر فلاته بالمدينة المنورة. ولم تكن هناك الفهارس التي تيسر الحصول على الحديث في مظانه. ولذلك لم ننجز إلا قليلًا أو أقل من القليل، حتى تفرقت بنا السبل، وألهتنا الأعمال الأخرى عن الكتاب. وكل هذا كان بتوفيق من الله عز وجل، وليس تعويقًا كما يبدو في ظاهر الأمر. وأذن الله عز وجل أن نبدأ العمل مرة أخرى في الكتاب بعد أن هيأ الله عز وجل الأحوال، وظهرت فهارس وكتب لم تكن موجودة قبل.
والكتاب عبارة عن أسئلة عن الأحاديث وجهها ابن أبي حاتم، بعضها إلى أبيه وبعضها إلى أبي زرعة أو إليهما معًا. وطبيعة هذا الكتاب ومنهجه يتجليان فيما نقدم تمهيدًا عن العلة في الحديث، وبيان أنواع الحديث في كتاب العلل، ثم أصالة ابن أبي حاتم في كتابه علل الحديث، فنخرج من هذا كله بمعرفة طبيعة الكتاب ومنهجه والتعرف عليه.
