إن تراث علماء الإسلام تراث زاخر، حفلت به الدنيا، وسطعت به حياة الخلق على مر العصور والأزمان، وسيظل هذا التراث أبدا مفيداً فياضاً للمعارف والعلوم المختلفة، نقتبس منه إن تراث علماء الإسلام تراث زاخر، حفلت به الدنيا، وسطعت به حياة الخلق على مر العصور والأزمان، وسيظل هذا التراث أبدا مفيداً فياضاً للمعارف والعلوم المختلفة، نقتبس منه في كل آن، ونستعين به في كل شأن من شؤون حياتنا. وما زلت إلا لأن تراثنا نفحات كتاب الله عزّ وجلّ، ولمحة من لمحات سنة رسوله صلّ الله عليه وسلم ومن هذا التراث الإسلامي كتاب العلامة الفيلسوف ابن رشد المفيد "بداية المجتهد والنهاية المقتصد".
وقد تم تحقيقه أولاً مطولاً ثم في مجلدين، وهاهو في ه ه الطبعة قد صدر محققاً مجلد واحد وهو في الفقه وأصوله.وماذا عن ابن رشد مؤلف هذا الكتاب ؟ فقد نقلت كتب التراجم كثيراً من صفات ابن رشد وشيمة أخلاقه، كان من أشد الناس تواضعاً، وأخفضهم جناحاً، وكان حسن الرأي ذكياً ذا نظر ثاقب، وبصيرة نافذة، وأفق واسع، حسن السيرة، نظيم القدر، شغوفاً بتحصيل العلوم، إلى جانب ذلك، كان ابن رشد من أكثر الناس استقلالاً برأيه، واعتزازاً بشخصيته، حيث كان واثقا بعقله، غير معتمد على أراء الآخرين، ولم يكن من أرباب الإبداع والتجديد، ولعل مؤلفاته وثروته العلمية الكبيرة لخير شاهد على ذلك.
وقد تمتع ابن رشد بعناية بالغة ، ومكانة مرموقة ، في عهد الخليفة يوسف بن عبد المؤمن.حيث ولاّه عدة وظائف مهمة في الدولة حيث تولى وظيفة القضاء بمدينة إشبيلية، وعين طبيبا ًلهذا الخليفة في مراكش، كما تولى، بعد فترة من الزمن، منصب قاضي القضاة في "قرطبة".
إلى جانب ذلك بلغ ابن رشد مرتبة عالية، ومكانة مرتفعة بين الفلاسفة المسلمين، حتى كان حقاً ختاماً طيباً لحلقة الفلاسفة الكبار في الإسلام، وكان صلة بين التراث الفلسفي الإسلامي، وبين النهضة الأوروبية الحديثة، ولم تقتصر مكانته على الفلسفة فحسب، بل كان مضرب المثل في الطب والفقه، ومختلف العلوم والفنون الأخرى، كعلم الخلاف، وعلوم العربية وآدابها، وعلم الكلام، وعلم الفلك.
ترك ابن رشد ثروة علمية غزيرة الإنتاج، تنوعت في مختلف العلوم والفنون، حيث قام بتأليف الكتب والمصنفات.
