جميع سكان هذه القرية على استعداد لتناول وجبة الطعام وقوفاً أمام النوافذ حتى يتأكدوا أن شيئاً من الأحداث لم يفتهم، فهم في حشرية دائمة وهم متشوقون لحدوث أمر مثير، عملية سطو... أو جريمة قتل مثلاً.
والسيدة بروثيو من وجهة نظر كاهن القرية هي امرأة شديدة اليأس، لا تصغي لأي وازع إلا إذا أثيرت عواطفها وهي الآن على علاقة غرامية حميمة بالرسام لورنس ريدنغ الذي أحبته بجنون وحدة ويأس، فيما هي امرأة متزوجة بالكولونيل بروثيو الرجل الغني البخيل والعجوز، الذي لم يحظى بحياته بشعبية قطّ. فالجميع يتمنون له الموت حتى ابنته وكاهن القرية...
ولسوء الحظ أنه قد وجد مقتولاً في مكتب الكاهن الذي لطالما عبّر عن مشاعره الحاقدة على هذا الكولونيل. ولكن هل يمكن له وهو رجل الدين أن يرتكب معصية ويساهم أو ينفذ عملية قتل؟ ومن هو القاتل الحقيقي لهذه الجريمة النكراء؟ وما هو الدور الذي ستلعبه الآنسة ماربل في هذه القضية وهي العجوز العانس التي تهوى حلّ الألغاز ومراقبة الناس وتحليل نفسيتهم؟
كان الكولونيل ميتاً.
لم يكن في الأمر شك. هناك كان منبطحاً مادّاً ذراعيه على المكتب في وضع مرعب غير طبيعي. استجمعتُ نفسي واتجهت إليه. اليد الباردة التي رفعتها سقطت هامدة بلا حياة!
المشكلة أنني كنت أقول-قبل ذلك بساعات فقط-إن أي شخص يُقدم على قتل الكولونيل بروثيرو سيقدّم خدمة جليلة للعالم.
وقد فعل أحدهم ذلك... في مكتبي!
