"جلس مستر سوتر في شرفة فيللا (عش الغراب) القائمة فوق صخرة عالية لتشرف على ميناء (لوموث)، وراح يرقب مضيفة سيد شارلس كارترايت صاحب الفيللا وهو يرتقي الطريق المعرج المؤدي إليها من ناحية البحر. وما لبث مستر سوتر أن سمع صوتاً فوق الشرفة عن كثب منه فأدار رأسه، وشاهد سيد بار تلوميو سترينج الطبيب الكبير الأخصائى في الأمراض العصبية يتقدم إلى ناحيته. وجذب الطبيب مقعداً وجلس قرب سوتر وتحدث إليه قائلاً: فيم تفكر يا صاحبي؟ فابتسم سوتر وقال مشيراً إلى مضيفهما وهو يتقدم جاداً في طريقه: ما كنت أظن أن سيد شارلس سوف يرضى بالبقاء طويلاً في مثل هذا المنفى.
وضحك الطبيب وقال: ما أعجب هذه المصادفة! إن هذا عين ما كنت أفكر فيه لقد أتيح لي أن أعرف سيد شارلس واتصل به في عهد الدراسة، حين كنا معاً في جامعة أكسفورد، وهو قد اعتزل حياة المسرح منذ عامين وأعلن عن عزمه على الإخلال إلى الحياة الريفية الهادئة، بعيداً عن ضوضاء المدن، وإشباع غرامه القديم بالبحر، ولذلك هبط إلى هذه البقعة التي توفر له فيه ما ينشد، وابتنى هذه (الفيللا) البديعة. وألحق يا سوتر انني كنت مثلك أول الأمر، لا أعتقد أنه سيركن طويلاً إلى مثل هذه الحياة.
وما كاد الطبيب يتم حديثه حتى أقبل سيد شارلز كارترايت متهلل الوجه وارتقى الشرفة في خفة ونشاط...". في هذه البقعة تحدث جريمة وضحيتها السيد برتلوميو الذي شرب كأس من النبيذ الفرنسي الذي دس فيه النيكوتين. فهل باستطاعة المحقق مستر بوارو الذي اكتشف سبب موت مستر برتلوميو الكشف عن الجاني هذا ما ستبينه حوادث هذه القصة المشوقة التي تجري في فيللا مستر كارترايت في منطقة "عش الغراب".
