خارج الغرفة الهادئة المضاءة بمصباح لم يكن دولاب الزمن يهدر باتجاه منتصف الليل وإنما كان قد أطاح بمنتصف الليل في هديره، لا كي يحيل منتصف الليل إلى حطام وإنما ليطيح بحطام منتصف الليل أرضاً فوقهم في تيار متوازن تلطخه سماء زرقاء، علم الآن أن اللحظة التي يستحيل إلغاؤها لم تكن عندما قال للوكاس: "لا بأس" من خلال قضبان الزنزانة المعدنية وإنما عاد إلى دخول الردهة وأغلق هذا الباب خلفه، حاول من جديد، حافظ على هدوئه حتى الآن، لم يتسرع آنذاك على وجه التحديد، لم يلح بشكل مباشر: كان عادياً صريحاً منطقياً فحسب: "لنفترض أن الرجل لم يقتل بمسدسه".
قال الخال: "بالطبع. هذا ما أدعيه بالضبط لو كنت مكان لوكاس -أو أي قاتل زنجي آخر لهذا السبب، ولو كنت مكان أي قاتل أبيض جاهل لهذا السبب بعينه. ربما قال لك تحديداً على أي هدف أطلق نيران مسدسه. ماذا كان؟ أرنباً، أو صفيحة تنك أو نيشاناً على شجرة فقط ليتأكد إذا كان محشواً بالفعل، أو إذا كان من الممكن أن يخطئ الهدف عملياً لنغض الطرف عن ذلك، لنسلم به جدلاً في البداية: ماذا؟ ماذا تقترح؟ الجواب لا، ماذا قال لك لوكاس أن تفعل؟".
أثارت رواية "غريب في المقبرة"، حين صدورها، جدلاً واسعاً بين تأييد ومعارضة. فنظر إلهيا البعض على أنها عمل باهت، واعتبرها آخرون عملاً متميزاً. و الرواية بغض النظر عن ذلك كله تحتوي على كافة الخصائص الفكرية والفنية لفوكنر. فهي كغيرها من أعمال فوكنر تركز على الحياة في الجنوب الأمريكي المتمسك بالتقاليد، الخائف من زحف الشمال المادي الذي يكتسح في طريقه ما تبقى من أصالة الحياة الاجتماعية. كما أنها مكتوبة بأسلوب فوكنر المعروف الذي يجمع ما بين السرد حسب طريقة الضمير الغائب والمتداخلة مع تداعي الأفكار، والجمل المعترضة، والسرد في حالة الوعي، أو اللاوعي، أو ضمير المتكلم، حتى تبدو الكتابة بحد ذاتها أشبه بصورة تمزقت إلى أجزاء عديدة وتوزعت هنا وهناك. فقام الكاتب بتجميعها كيفما اتفق-حسبما تبدو للقارئ.
