على مدى حياة طويلة، كان المؤلف قد شاهد لوحات كثيرة، واستمع إلى كثير من الموسيقى، وقرأ في الكتب ما لا يحصى، فتراءى له من خلال ذلك أن بعض الأعمال كان فريداً متميزاً، لكنها ليست وحدها هي التي بهرته: ففي ذهنه، هناك شبكة مطابقات تقوم بينها.

إن هذا الكتاب، يفتح آفاقاً في الرسم والموسيقى والأدب، تتشابك وتتعاشق. هنا خواطر حول بوسان واينجز تتدامج مع سوائح أخرى حول السماع الموسيقي كما تتطور منذ رامبو. وهنا تقارن أفكار ديدرو وروسو حول الفنون الجميلة، مع أفكار عالم موسيقي شبه منسيّ، معاصر لهما، كانت أطروحاته قد استبقت الألسنة النبوية.
وفي عصر قريب منا، يتناول المؤلف قصيدة شهيرة لرامبو، بتحليل مسبوق بملاحظتين غير منشورتين حول الموضوعات عينها، تبادلهما مع أندريه برتون منذ نصف قرن. أخيراً، يتذكر المؤلف أنه عالم أنام (اتنولوجي) فيضيف إلى الملف، تمثلات هنود أميركا الجنوبية الذين كانوا، من خلال أساطيرهم، قد صنعوا أعمالهم الفنية الخاصة بهم. إن هذه الإضاءات المتنوعة تتلاقى وتتداخل... وتسلط الأضواء على بعض الأسس التي كانت وراء الحكم الجمالي، وتبين المكانة التي يحتلها الفن في معرفة العقل.
