يحوى هذا الكتاب موضوعا نراه جديدا على المباحث الكلامية حيث يقوم بالتحليل والنقد من خلال كتب المعتزلة وأراء الشارحين لها من قدماء ومحدثين - لمشكلة المعرفة عند المعتزلة التى تكمن أهميتها في أن غايتها المعرفة بالله التى هى غاية المباحث الكلامية وقد وصل بنا البحث إلى أن أراء المعتزلة في المعرفة كانت نابعة من نظريهم للعقل وأن خلاصة مذهبهم في ذلك التوحيد بين العقل والمعرفة فأصبحت المعرفة حتى الحسية منها والسمعية كلها عقلية. وانهم بأرائهم هذه لم يكونوا ناقلين لثقافات أجنبية أو متأثرين بديانات سابقة بل كانوا معبرين عن روح الإسلام متبعين في ذلك منهجا عقليا صرفا كانوا به فلاسفة الإسلام بحق مفرقين في ذلك بين مجال العقائد ومجال العبادات فالعقل عندهم بنية متكاملة ذو آدلة منهجية وأدلة معرفية لذلك أوجبوا المعارف كلها بالعقل وهم في ذلك بم ينقصوا من القدرة الإلهية لإثباتهم العقل والشرع لطفا وتمكينا أوجبه الله تعال على نفسه لعباده ليمكنهم من أداء ما كلفهم من معرفته تعالى بواحدانيته وعدله. ولهذا نأمل أن يكون هذا الكتاب خطوة لتغير النظرة الشائعة للاعتزال ولاعتباره فهما عقليا للعقيد داعين الله سبحانه أن يؤتي ثمرته المرجوة حتى يعود مجد الإسلام والمسلمين.
