مرَ علم النفس في تاريخه بصراع بين الأفكار التقليدية القديمة وبين الأفكار الحديثة المعادية للفكر الغيبي والروحاني القديم. وقد اتخذ هذا الصراع أشكالاً عديدة تمثلت في العديد من المدارس ووجهات النظر حول موضوع علم النفس ومناهج البحث فيه.
يتبنى هذا الكتاب وجهة النظر التطورية التي لا تكتمل فائدة التاريخ بدونها. ففي خلال فترة زمنية محددة –هي مائة عام- يتعرض "فلوجل" الذي شغل منصب استاذ كرسي علم النفس بجامعة لندن والذي كان محللاً نفسياً مرموقاً في ذات الوقت- للتيارات الفكرية الأساسية في علم النفس متناولاً المتشعبة ليصل بنا في النهاية إلى صورة متكاملة نسبياً، مع وضوح في العرض وبراعة فائقة في الربط بين مختلف الأفكار.
يتعقب الكتاب خمسة مراحل في تطور علم النفس، والعلماء الذين مثلوا كل مرحلة ونظرياتهم الكبرى خلال التاريخ. المرحلة الأولى: علم النفس في عام 1833، ومن علمائها "هربرت" و"توماس براون"، المرحلة الثانية: من 1833 إلى 1860، ومن علمائها "موللر" و"هلمهولتز"، "فيبر"، و"فخنر". المرحلة الثالثة: من 1860 إلى 1900 ومن علمائها "دارون"، "سبنسر"، "جالتون"، برنتانو"،و"جيمس"، المرحلة الرابعة: من 1900 إلى 1933 وتتحدث عن مدارس علم النفس الحديث ومنها "علم النفس البنائي"، و"علم النفس الإرتقائي"، و"السلوكية وعلم نفس الحيوان"، "فرويد والتحليل النفسي"، و"سيبرمان ومدرسة "التحليل العاملي"...الخ. أما المرحلة الخامسة والأخيرة في الكتاب فتأتي على: تطور علم النفس ما بين 1933، 1963 ويدرس تأثير علم النفس ذي الصبغة الإنسانية التي تركته السيكولوجية في مجال التربية والخدمة الإجتماعية وسلوك الجماعة
