لأن الشعر هو دائماً ابن الحياة، والحياة لا تعاش بغير حب، وخاصة لدى الشعراء. بنى حمود الشايجي عمارته الشعرية على ثيمة الحب. ليأتي ديوانه "عشق" لوحة فسيفسائية غاية في الإتقان والرهافة والبوح الشفيف؛ المصاغ في زخرفة لغوية منتقاة بدقة؛ ومستقاة من قاموس الشعر العربي الأصيل.
هو شاعر يرى المرأة كمخلوق شفاف أقرب إلى الحلم منه إلى الحضور المجسد في كتلة من لحم ودم وثياب. إنسانة ملهمة تمنح الحب والجمال والبهجة. كل ذلك يأتي تعبيراً وتقديراً من الشاعر عن العاطفة البشرية في محتواها العميق الذاهب نحو الجوهر. ومن هنا يحق لنا القول إن الشاعر الشايجي شاعر المرأة بصدق قلّ مثيله بين الشعراء.
يقول: "... أحبك يا من تختزل زوايا عقلي/ في دائرة حبك/ حيث:/تُحوُّلُ كل الأشياء إلى خرافةٍ/ من ذهب/ حيث:/ تباغتُني في فتنةٍ/ وتكبلني بترف (...)/ أحبك/ وأرقص على صراطك المستقيم/ عسى تنظرُ إلى وجهيْ/ وأتفككُ 40 قطعة كل قطعةٍ منها/ في جيب حرامي جديدٍ".
يضم الديوان ما يقارب المائة وستون قصيدة تتراوح بين الطول والقصر نذكر من عناوينها: "خاصرة عقلي"، "خرائطي"، "دليل"، "وادي إبليس"، "في لمَّةِ الحب"، "عن شيخ الحب"، "أنا أنت"، "بلا شريك"... إلخ.
