الحضارات الأصيلة المعطاء، في كل زمان، تجنح دائماً إلى التواصل، إذ لا توجد حضارة حية إلا وتكون قادرة على تصدير آلائها وإرسال إشعاعها، الفكري والفني والأدبي، وآداب الحضارات القديمة التي يعالجها هذا الكتاب عرفت التواصل والتعايش، التزامن والتعاقب، فقامت بينها الأواصر، لا بدواعي التقليد أو التثاقف فحسب، بل بدواعي الإبداع التي تحيل حبة الرمل إلى محارة فلؤلؤة ينتظمها سلك جديد، مرئي أو غير مرئي، هو الخيط الموصل بين الحضارات في استمراريتها وتجددها.
وبرغم غلبة الإيديولوجيات في ذلك الزمن القديم، فقد حاول الأدب أن يخرج من أسارها ليصبح هو نفسه حقل ازدهار الأفكار والأشكال التي تروق وتمتع، وليغدو حوار الإنسان مع ذاته ووجوده الطبيعي والاجتماعي. لهذا، فالكاتب لا يكتفي بالنظر إلى هذه الآداب القديمة بوصفها مادة تاريخية مستقلة بأحداثها ومواقفها ورؤاها فحسب بل يحاول أن ينظر إليها أيضاً بوصفها مادة غير تاريخية، أي مادة متحركة قابلة للتشكل، متعددة الوجوه بتعدد القراءات والمواقف. صور اجتماعية -فردية- قد يغلب عليها الطابع الاجتماعي لذلك الزمن ولكنه لا يستوعبها ولا يستطيع إخفاء ذاتية الفنان أو الأديب أو الشاعر، حتى ولو لم يصلنا اسمه. ومن خلال هذه الآداب تبدو اللغة والمجتمع الوسيط الإلزامي لكل نتاج ثقافي يولده البشر للتعبير عن ذواتهم الفردية والاجتماعية ومدى ارتقائهم في زمان ومكان معينين، فكل أدب إنما يحدده عصره ويمثل الإنسانية بقدر ما يتلاءم مع أفكار ومطامح وحاجات وضع تاريخي خاص، وإن ملامح إنسانية ثابتة تتوحد حتى في فن يحدده عصره.
إن الظاهرات الاجتماعية إنما تربطها ببعضها روابط التنوع وقوامها ومنتهاها الناس الذين عاشوا هذه الحقبة أو تلك من تاريخ البشرية، وإن ما أسبغ على البشر عظمتهم الخاصة هو بحثهم عن حقيقة أنفسهم وعن علاقتهم بالكون والوجود، يضاف إلى ذلك ما قاموا به من محاولات لإبراز صور الحقيقة هذه في إشكال تسر الناظر وترضي حواسه ما دام الجمال ينصرف إلى أية صفة تجعل شيئاً أو شكلاً ما ممتعاً لمتذوقه.
إن الحياة الإنسانية لا يمكن أن تقاس كمياً، وبما أن العمل الفني هو العمل الإنساني الوحيد الذي يدوم، فهو الذي يجسد لنا فن الحياة الذي خلقه رجال لا نعرف عنهم شيئاً بدونه.
