في عام 1851 يسافر تولستوي، وهو في الثالثة والعشرين من العمر، إلى القفقاس لزيارة أخيه الضابط في الجيش الروسي، الذي كان يقوم بعمليات حربية هناك. والحياة في القفقاس تغني ليف تولستوي كانسان، وككاتب، فيتعرف عن كثب عن طباع الجنود والضباط التي صورت بعد وقت قصير في قصص القفقاس الحربية. وينضم ليف تولستوي غلى الجيش كطالب عسكرية، ويشترك في العمليات القتالية.
وبعد أحدى الطلعات القتالية في الجبال يكتب قصة "غارة" التي يستهل بها هذا الكتاب.
