إن آثار الجاحظ تنطوي على قيمة فكرية ترجع إلى الشمول والأصالة. لقد فكر في جميع المسائل التي تصادف الإنسان، وأصدر حولها العديد من الآراء المنهجية والتعميرية السديدة فكانت نظريته في المعرفة مميزة انفرد بها عن سائر المتكلمين والفلاسفة.
أما الطابع العقلي فهو واضح القسمات في كتابات الجاحظ، بناء على هذا، فإن المناحي الفلسفية عند الجاحظ التي جاءت كمحور بحث في هذا الكتاب، تعني تلك الاتجاهات الفكرية التي تنطلق من ميدان الفلسفة لا من ميدان الأدب. ذلك أن الجاحظ لم يكن أديباً فقط، وإنما كان مفكراً أيضاً، اشرأب بنظره إلى ما بعد آفاق الأدب، فأطل على ميادين الفلسفة المختلفة من طبيعيات وإلهيات وجماليات وأخلاقيات واجتماعيات، وراح يراقب ما يعترك في ساحتها من مذاهب، وما يحتدم عندها من جدل، ودفعه فضوله إلى إبداء آرائه حول مسائل الفلسفة الأساسية.
وقد نثر تلك الآراء في تضاعيف كتبه، ولم يقدم على جمعها في صيغة المذهب الفلسفي المنتظم على نحو ما هو معهود عند كبار الفلاسفة. لذا جمع الباحث في هذا الكتاب، تلك الآراء المبعثرة في آثار الجاحظ، ونسقها، مستجلياً، على ضوئها، نظرة الجاحظ إلى الإنسان والكون.
