يحتوي هذا الكتاب على سبع عشرة قصة يدور موضوعها الرئيسي حول العربي وشخصيته من منظور يهودي. وقد نجح الكاتب في حشد كل هذه الأعمال لتمثل قرناً كاملاً من الإبداع الأدبي العبري لأدباء يعدّون من عمالقة هذا الأدب في العصر الحديث. ولعل عنوان الكتاب يقدم للقارئ عمق التناقض بين تطلعات اليهود لاحتلال الأرض وتمسك العرب الفلسطينيين بها، فكلٌّ يشتاق إليها ويتعامل معها من منظوره الخاص، ويمكن القول بأن الكتاب بمحتواه يمثل وثيقة تاريخية عن مراحل تطور نظرة اليهود للعرب من خلال الاحتكاك المباشر معهم على أرض دار حولها الصراع، ولا يزال يدور، ولا أحد يعلم متى ينتهي الصراع.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن هذه النماذج التي قدمها إيهود بن عيزر في هذه المختارات، وبترتيبها الزمني، تعكس للقارئ مراحل نمو الشخصية العبرية في الأدب العبري في الوقت نفسه الذي يفرض فيه نظرة هذا الأدب للشخصية العربية ومراحل تطور العلاقة بين الشخصيتين اللتين تتصارعان على أرض واحدة، أو كما أراد أن يسميه إيهود بن عيزر الصراع على وطن تتناقض فيه الأشواق.
