تعد مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة من المراحل المهمة والحرجة في الحياة الأسرية، كما أنها الأكثر فاعلية في قولبة شخصية الطفل وتهيئته للاتصال الأوسع في المدرسة ومن ثم المجتمع.
ويواجه الآباء والأمهات والقائمين على عملية التنشئة الاجتماعية أطفالاً لديهم مجموعة من المشاكل السلوكية والنفسية المرتبطة بعدم الشعور بالأمن، كالخوف والقلق والخجل والاستحواذ ومشاكل السلوك غير الناضج، كالنشاط الزائد والفوضوية وأحلام اليقظة والأنانية والغيرة والتمركز حول الذات. ومشاكل نمائية وخاصة تلك التي تتعلق بنمو الطفل والإعاقات المصاحبة له. ومشاكل في اضطراب العادات كمص الإبهام وقضم الأظافر والتبول اللاإرادي والتبرز اللاإرادي واضطراب النوم ومشكلات الأكل والتلعثم وغيرها.
إن تكرار هذه السلوكيات يؤدي إلى قلق الوالدين والمربين والمعلمين ويثير مخاوفهم مما يفرض عليهم ضرورة التعرف على مظاهرها ومسبباتها والعوامل التي تؤثر فيها وطرق تعديلها.
إن السلوك المشكل كغيره من السلوكيات يمكن تعلمه وتعديله وفق مبادئ التعلم المختلفة، لذا فقد تم عرض بعض المشاكل النفسية والسلوكية للطفل في هذا الكتاب من حيث أسبابها ومظاهرها وكذلك مقترحات لعلاجاها ومن ثم تعديل السلوك بشكل عام.
إن الكتاب الحالي شامل يغطي بعضاً من المشكلات الشائعة عند الأبناء سواء أكانوا أطفالاً أم مراهقين وقد تم توضيح المشكلة ثم التحدث عن أسبابها وأساليب الوقاية منها وكيفية علاجها.
إن الأساليب المقترحة للوقاية من المشكلة هي أساليب صالحة للتطبيق على الأطفال والمراهقين الذين لا توجد لهم مشكلة.
إن هذا الكتاب موجه للآباء إلا أنه في الواقع يصلح لكي يستخدم كدليل عمل لمختلف فئات العاملين في المجالات التي تتطلب تقديم المساعدة للأطفال والمراهقين كالمعلمين والمرشدين التربويين والأخصائيين الاجتماعيين.
