"قومي نتزود من أسفلت مدينتنا، من وحل الشارع، من كسل المقهى الشعبي ومن أصوات الباعة، وحشرجة العربات ‘ذا امتزجت، في لحم أصابعنا، قومي نتجول محميين بميليشات الحب، وأسلحة الفقراء المنسيين، فإذا انكسر الجسدان صرخت أحبك، فاحترسي للظل، وللشجر المسكون بتربته، والسل الطاعن في الأوراق، مجدتك حين سقطت معفرة، ورجمت جبيتك بالعشاق، وأقمت هنا ملكاً منفياً ما بين الثلج الصاعد من رئتيك، وبين الجثث المحروقة في الأسواق".
"...نحن، في شعر محمد علي شمس الدين، أمام موقف أو رؤية للعالم، حيث الشيء يحمل نقيضه... وهذه الفكرة الصراعية هي فكرة قديمة، إلا أنها تأخذ لدى الشاعر انسجاماً خاصاً... حيث تتصارع الأشياء لا لتتناحر وتمحي، بل لتتآلف، مما يعطي للقصائد أماناً خاصاً أو سلاماً خاصاً، ويعطي للشاعر، في هذه الحركة المزدوجة، حالات متشابكة كالأدغال، كثيرة التضاد والتصادم، حالات صراعية يعلن نفسه في نهايتها "ملك الضدين..".
