This dictionary contains well over 9,000 entries and provides the learner with a variety of renderings of English words in Colloquial Arabic. The Arabic is written in a broad phonemic transcription that makes the dictionary a useful tool for students learning any variety of Arabic spoken in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
In addition to the Colloquial Arabic meaning provided, the dictionary contains some grammatical features (e.g. parts of speech, gender, tense, number, etc.) to aid the student of Arabic. In certain cases, the words are given in short sentences to illustrate usage.
Ideally, of course, foreign students of Colloquial Arabic should enrol in a class where the phonological and grammatical habits can be formed as a result of appropriate drills. It would also help to have students mix with native speakers of Colloquial Arabic in natural social and cultural situations in order to expand their passive and active vocabulary contextually.
For the best results from the use of this dictionary as a learning aid, students are advised to acquaint themselves thoroughly with the advice and information provided in the following pages under Notes on Pronunciation and Notes on Grammar.
