تحتل الفنون الإسلامية مكاناً بارزاً ومميزاً بين الفنون العالمية لما تتمتع به من ثراء وتنوع كبير في أشكالها وطرزها وأيضاً زخارفها، وقد امتدت الفنون الإسلامية على مساحة شاسعة من اليابسة هي مساحة العالم الإسلامي نفسه عبر العصور والحقب التاريخية والدول التي ظهرت وحكمت العالم الإسلامي.
وكان لكل دولة منها كبيرة كانت أم صغيرة طرازها الفني الخاص بها، وفي نفس الوقت تشترك هذه الطرز الفنية الإسلامية الفرعية مع بعضها ببعض السمات والخصائص التي تجمعها لأنها في النهاية تنتمي إلى مصدر واحد، وفي نفس الوقت جاءت الفنون الإسلامية مختلفة عن بقية الفنون الأخرى سواء السابقة عليها أو المعاصرة لها.
وتُمثل الفنون الزخرفية في العصر العثماني أحد أهم الطرز الزخرفية الفنية الإسلامية، وتتميز بتراثها الكبير وتنوعها، وهذا أمر طبيعي نظراً لطول عمر الدولة العثمانية من سنة 1299م حينما كانت إمارة ثم توسعت وأصبحت دولة كبرى حتى سقطت سنة 1923م، وامتدت على مساحات كبيرة من الأراضي في آسيا وأوروبا وأفريقيا.
وبالتالي تأثرت هذه الفنون بشكل مستمر بما يحيط بها من بلاد إسلامية وغير إسلامية، لذلك نجد ان أشكال المنتج الفني العثماني الذي تم إنتاجه في القرن الرابع عشر أو الخامس عشر الميلاديين يختلف إلى حد كبير عن المنتج الفني الذي ينتمي لنفس الطراز لكنه يعود إلى القرون التالية السادس عشر وما بعده، لذلك كان الثراء والتنوع أهم ما يميز الفنون الزخرفية الإسلامية في العصر العثماني.
