المتأمّل في دراسات العرب والمسلمين للظاهرة الإستشراقية يكاد يجزم بأنها لا تعدو السرد التاريخي لأعمال المستشرقين والتعريف بأعلامها، اللَّهمَ إلاَّ في حالات قليلة - إن لم تكن نادرة - عُنيت بدراسة مناهج التفكير الإستشراقي.
وحتى هذا الضرب من الدراسات عالج المنهجيات الإستشراقية بسطحيّة فضلاً عن وقوعه تحت تأثير الإنبهار بها والتسليم لها، أو إعلان الحرب ضدّها لإعتباراتٍ مختلفة.
والدراسات التي يغلب عليها الطابع السردي في التعريف بمدارس الإستشراق ليست قليلة الأهمية على أية حال، ولكنّ الوقوف عند ذلك الحدّ منها، وعدم الغوص في أعماق النصّ للتعرّف على ما فيه من قوّة وضعف جعل تلك الدراسات تبدو متواضعة، وهذا ما دعا بعض المستشرقين المعاصرين إلى إتهام كتابات المسلمين بأنها سطحيّة، وأحكامها ساذجة.
وهذا الكلام قد يكون مبالغاً فيه، ولكنه لا يخلو من صواب، إنّ الدراسة المؤثرة والفعالة للإستشراق هي الدراسة العميقة الشاملة للنصّ الإستشراقي، وعدم إفراغ الوسع في دراسة النصّ الإستشراقي يجعل كلّ دراساتنا أشبه بالتشخيص الخارجي للظواهر.
