جاءت تصنيفات العلوم عند العرب شاملة لأكثر من حقل وموضوع وحيز من المعرفة العلمية، كما أن هذا التنوع في التصنيفات جعل مصطلح العلوم عند العرب شمولياً حاوياً على كل نوع من أنواع المعارف الإنسانية وعلى مختلف الأصعدة عقلية كانت أم نقلية فكرية أو سماعية، وهذه الموسوعة التي نحن بصددها قد أوردت كل علم مع تفرعاته من حيث المصطلح العام والخاص بهذا العلم، أو بما تولد عنه من علوم جزئية. وقد رصد المؤلف جزءاً من الموسوعة للعلوم اليونانية ابتداءً وذلك عائد إلى أن قسماً منها أمسى لصيقاً بالتقليد العلمي عند العرب.
والموسوعة (بجزئيها) تمكن الباحث والدارس من الإحاطة بالمصطلحات العلمية الأساسية لكل علم إ ذ جاءت وافية شاملة لكل ما قد يتفرع عن كل مصطلح. وقد تم اختيار الموضوعات الرئيسة التي تفي بتعريف المصطلح وبيان أبعاده، كما استبعدت الموضوعات الغامضة التي بدت ثانوية في مصادرها الأصلية وقد جعل كل تعريف مستقلاً متماسكاً ومتكاملاً بحد ذاته وقد حصرت بعض التعريفات بمعنى مفيد منعاً للتطويل. كما استوفيت في المصطلح معظم تفرعاته لا سيما تلك المتداخلة معه ضمن حقل دلالي واحد. وأبرزت عدة مصطلحات مستجدة عند علماء العرب والتي لم ترد في الأصول اليونانية أو الفارسية أو الهندية وفي مختلف العلوم كالطب والكيمياء والفلك، والموسيقى أو الجبر والحساب، إضافة إلى اعتماد اللفظ المفرد في معظم المصطلحات الذي جاء بصيغة النكرة. كما جرى ترتيب المصطلحات بحسب اللفظ دون العودة إلى الجذر.
