كان لإنتاج إبن رشد دور في تطوّر الفكر الفلسفي في العصور الوسطى بأوروبا الغربيّة، إلاّ أنّ لهذا الفيلسوف دوراً فذّاً آخر في تطوّّر الفكر العربي الإسلامي، يستند إلى تصدّيه للتّأويل الأفلاطوني المحدث للمشائيّة من جهة وانتصاره للأرسطوطاليّة في وجه حملات علماء الكلام، لا سيّما الأشاعرة، من جهة ثانيّة وقد ألّف في هذا الباب ثلاثة تصانيف يجب اعتبارها دون مراء الرّكيزة الكبرى لموقفه الفكريّ الأصيل، هي " تهافت التّهافت" و"فصل المقال" و" الكشف عن مناهج الأدلّة". ومن مؤلّفاته الفقهيّة " نهاية المجتهد وبداية المقتصد". ومن جرّاء عمله بالقضاء وبالفقه المالكي أضفى طابعاً خاصّاً على فلسفته، يتجلّى بوجه خاصّ في التّوفّر على معالجة القضايا الشّرعيّة والكلاميّة واتّصالها بالفلسفة، على وجه يكاد لا يكون له نظير في تاريخ الفلسفة العربيّة.
