ثلاث ميزات لابن رشد ليست لغيره من فلاسفة الإسلام، الأولى أنه أكبر فلاسفة العرب واشهر فلاسفة الإسلام، والثانية أنه من أعظم حكماء القرون الوسطى عموماً، وهو مؤسس مذهب الفكر الحر، فكان له قدر عظيم في نظر أهل أوروبة فجعلوه في مصاف فلاسفتهم المعادين للعقائد الدينية، و لم يبخل عليه ميكائيل أنجلو بمكان في جحيمه الخيالي الذي صوره في سقف معبد سيكستين بالفاتيكان، لا باعتباره مسلماً بل بكونه فيلسوفاً معطلاً، كذلك ذكره دانتي في ملحمته في النشيد الثالث، كما أنته لا يخلو كتاب فلسفي من ذكره وشرح آرائه. أما الميزة الثالثة فكونه أندلسياً، وللأندلس بنفسها وآفاقها وتاريخها وآثارها مكانة خاصة في تاريخ العالم.
وإلى جانب هذا كله كان ابن رشد فقيهاً وله في الفقه كتاب اعتبر من أحسن ما ألف في هذا الموضع، وهو كتاب "بداية المجتهد ونهاية المقتصد" وهكذا فإن هذا المفكر تعددت ثقافاته وعلومه، وتنوعت معارفه في الفلسفة والطب من الفقه وعلم الكلام وغيرها من العلوم التي شملت مختلف جوانب الحياة.
ومن خلال هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف ترجمة لهذا العظيم، سلك فيها الباحث مسلكاً خاصاً، فجمع بين حكاية السيرة الذاتية لهذا الفيلسوف والتعريف بفكره من خلال أهم كتبه في الفقه والعقيدة وأصول العقيدة والفلسفة والعلوم والسياسة، وهو بذلك قسم كتابه إلى أقسام عدة، تناول في أولها سيرة ابن رشد حياته وآثاره ومذهبه في العقل وأثره وتعاليمه ومكانته وانحلال الفلسفة من بعده، وتحدث في ثانيها عن أهم كتب ابن رشد ومنها نذكر كتاب "الكشف عن مناهج الأدلة في عقائد الملة، وتعريف ما وقع فيها بحسب التأويل من الشبه المزيفة والعقائد المضلة، فصل المقال فيما بين الحكمة والشريعة من الاتصال"، "تهافت الفلاسفة وتهافت التهافت"...
