يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تنمية مهارات القراءة والإتصال اللغوي للطالب الجامعي بطريقة عملية تطبيقية متدرجة، تبدأ بتأكيد المفهوم الحديث للقراءة الذي يعتمد على: التعرّف والنطق، والفهم والنقد، والموازنة وحل المشكلات، ثم التركيز على مهارات الفهم العميق لما يقرأ سواء ما بين السطور أو ما وراءها: ليصل إلى درجة تمكنه من التقويم والتحليل والإستنتاج، والإرتفاع به إلى مستوى القراءة الناقدة وتمحيص ما يقرأ، فيتم تدريبه على استخدام مهاراته العقلية: ليكون له تفكيره الناقد، ورأيه المستقل وما يتميز به من وضوح ودقة، ومرونة وفاعلية، ودافعية ومنطقية، وهو ما يعكس قدرته على التفكير فيما يعتقد ويعمل.
ويهدف الكتاب أيضاً إلى الإنطلاق من مرحلة القراءة الناقدة إلى مرحلة التعلم الذاتي من خلال أنشطة الطالب التي ينجزها عن طريق الإستعانة بالمكتبات ومصادر المعرفة الأخرى كالانترنت وغيرها، لأجل تنظيمها وتحليلها، وتوثيقها من مصادرها، ثم يأتي بعد ذلك إعداد التقارير والمقالات والملخصات، بحيث يتوفر فيها الوضوح ودقة المعنى، والصياغة اللغوية، والعرض المنظم. وهكذا حتى يصل الطالب إلى المستوى المطلوب من توظيف أساليب البحث العلمي ومهاراته خلال مرحلة التعلم.
