الدكتور عبد الله المدني باحث ومحاضر أكاديمي متخصص في العلاقات الدولية والدراسات الآسيوية من البحرية، يحمل دكتوراه الفلسفة في العلوم السياسية، وماجستير العلاقات الدولية والاستراتيجيات، ودبلومي التخصص في الشؤون الآسيوية، وبكالوريوس الاقتصاد. له أكثر من عشرة مؤلفات في مجال تخصصه الأكاديمي وفي أدب الرحلات والتاريخ والسياسات المعاصرة وقضايا التنمية. غير أن هذا الكتاب هو باكورة أعماله الروائية. وفيه يتحدث عن سالم، الشاب البحريني الذي قادته طموحاته العلمية إلى السفر إلى لبنان في أوائل السبعينات ليلتحق بواحدة من أفضل الجامعات في الشرق الأوسط. في مدينة كانت وقتها من أجمل مدن الكون وأغلاها وأكثرها تحرراً وانفتاحاً وتعددية. وهناك يحاول سالم ذو الإمكانيات المالية المحدودة والتجارب القليلة مسايرة الأوضاع المحيطة به، فيصطدم بعقبات ومشاكل كثيرة، لكنه أيضاً يخوض مغامرات غرامية ومعارك فكرية، مستفيداً إلى أقصى حد مما كانت توفره بيروت آنذاك من متع ومباهج وثقافات. وبقيام الحرب اللبنانية الأهلية يضطر سالم اضطراراً إلى ترك المدينة التي أحبها ليلجأ إلى القاهرة التي كانت في منتصف السبعينات لا تزال تشهد تحولات سياسية واقتصادية عسيرة للتخلص من الإرث الناصري.
