ما هي الفصاحة؟ الفصاحة: هي البيان، وسلامة الألفاظ من الإبهام وسوء التأليف، والفصيح: هو من يُحسن البيان، ويميز جيّد الكلام من رديئه، ويقال؛ كلام فصيح، أي: سليم واضح يدرك السمع حسنه، والعقل دقته، ولسان فصيح: طلقٌ يُعين صاحبه على أصالة التعبير. هذا ويقول بعض الباحثين: إن اللغة الفصحى هي لغة قريش، لأنه كانت أفصح اللهجات العربية وأصفاها. كما ويرى فريق آخر أن اللغة الفصحى هي من بين لهجات القبائل العربية، وأنها هي التي سادت في المجال الأدنى فأصبحت لغة الأدب والفصاحة قبل ظهور الإسلام، وقد نزل القرآن الكريم بها.
ومن الثابت علمياً وتاريخياً أن قريشاً كانت أجود العرب انتقاءً للأفصح من الألفاظ، وأسهلها على اللسان عند النطق، وأحسنها مسموعاً وأبينها إبانة عما في النفس. لهذا السبب كانت مجالس العشيرة، ومجتمعات القبائل وحلقات المباريات الأدبية، وندوات الأدباء والنُّقاد وسائر الأحوال الاجتماعية من أهم مصادر الإلهام الفكري حيث تسيل روافده، وتفيض ينابيعه، وتتدفق شلالاته، فتسبح فيه الخواطر، وتحلق في أجوائه الخيالات، ولهذا السبب وضع المؤلف كتابه هذا "الأدب والعلم عند العرب" بين يدي القارئ، وفيه أورد الآيات القرآنية، والأحاديث النبوية، والأقوال والحكم، والقصص والعبر التي جاءت من الفصاحة والفصحاء. وهدفه إسداء حقٍ من حقوق الرَّعيل الأول، وتوضيح وتبيان منهج جمالي من مناهج أمة العرب.
