يعد المطران جرمانوس فرحات مؤلف الكتاب أستاذاً كبيراً، ورائداً قديراً، لأكثر روّاد النهضة العربية الحديثة وأعلامها، الذين استفادوا من تراثه الفكري واللغوي، في النحو والصرف، والتأليف المعجمي، والترجمة والتعريب، هذا وإن المطالع لكتابه "بلوغ الأرب في علم الأدب" الذي نقلب صفحاته، يرى نفسه أمام سجل حافل من الأنواع البلاغية بأسلوب مبسط بعيد عن التقليد والغموض، قريب من أفهام طلاب اللغة العربية المبتدئين، آخذاً بأيديهم لتعليمهم فناً بلاغياً جديداً، بأسلوب خاص.
فالكتاب مقدمة ساق بعدها أنواع الجناس المقصود إيراده، وهي تسعة وثلاثون نوعاً مقرونة بأقوال الشعراء على وجه التمثيل والاستشهاد، وأنواع الجناس المسوقة منها: المقرر في كتب الفن، أي البديع، التلخيص للقزوين، وخزانة الأدب للجمري، وأنواع الربيع لابن معصوم، ومنها توسع فيه أهل ما بعد القرن التاسع، فزادوا أنواعاً من أمثلة ذلك: الجناس المسمّط، وهو نوع بلاغي يتعلق بعدد أشطار المنظومة أو البيت وتوزيعها، ويعتبر كتاب فرحات هذا كتاب بلاغي لطلاب جامعة اليوم بل هو معجم لكثير من الشعراء في مختلف العصور، إذ إحتوى الكتاب على قول كل شاعر برع في هذا النوع من الفن الأدبي، خلال تسعة وثلاثين فناً من الفنون البلاغية لأنواع الجناس فقط، ومائة وثلاثة وخمسين فناً من علمي البديع والبيان، وفرحات بعمله هذا يكون قد ألقى ضوءاً على الدور المهم الذي قام به المسيحيون في نشأة الثقافة وحضارتها العربية، والمؤلف انتهج طريقاً تميز به عن سائر معاصريه بأنه فصل أنواعه البديعية وجعلها في بابين مستقلين: الباب الأول في أنواع الجناسات وأحكامها، الباب الثاني في أنواع البديع، الخاتمة: تنبيه الشاعر فيما لم يكن به شاعراً.
